After 10+ years in higher education marketing, focusing on student recruitment, I've come to understand that the journey from prospect to student to lifelong alumni advocate is an evolving one.

Here are some of the important insights I've gathered: 💡

  • The Student Journey Has Evolved: In my opinion, the traditional linear marketing funnel is dead. We are now dealing with a more circular and complex journey. It's crucial to adapt your strategy to this shift, ensuring you meet students where they are and guide them effectively through their decision-making process.

  • Leverage Student-Driven Touch Points: Word-of-mouth recommendations, online reviews, and other student-driven touch points significantly influence decision-making during the active evaluation phase. Harness these channels to amplify our reach and impact.

  • Convert Passive Students/Alumni: Not all students or alumni are active advocates for their institutions. The challenge is to engage these passive individuals, turning them into active loyalists who not only stick with you but also recommend your institutions to others.

  • Sell the Solution, Not Just the Degree: A degree is not just a piece of paper; it's a solution to a student's aspirations, a pathway to their future, a response to a grand market challenge, and more. Tailor your messaging, emphasizing the benefits and opportunities a degree can provide.

So, how can you make these strategies even more effective? 🎯

  • Personalize the Journey: Tailor your communications and interactions to the individual student's needs, interests, and aspirations. Personalization can significantly enhance engagement and conversion rates.

  • Invest in Long-Term Relationships: Don't stop at graduation. Continue nurturing relationships with your alumni, providing them with ongoing value that keeps them connected and invested in your institution's success. They are your biggest advocates and proof point.

  • Encourage and Reward Advocacy: Make it easy and rewarding for your students and alumni to advocate for your institution. Implement referral programs, recognize their efforts, and celebrate their successes.
