Operating Model5 min read

Building a communications function that outlasts any one person.

The strongest communications teams I have seen were also the most fragile. Everything that made them work lived in one person's head.

White concrete facade with a rigid repeating structural grid and hard shadows, crossed by a single accent line.

Institutional communications tends to be built around a strong operator. The team executes; the operator holds the standard, the relationships and the calendar in their head. It works, until that person leaves, gets stretched, or has to hand a live crisis to someone else at 2am.

A function that outlasts any one person has three parts: an explicit operating model that says who decides what, a martech stack that carries institutional memory, and a governance layer that enforces the brand and message discipline without needing the operator in the room.

The move from personal to institutional is not a reorganization. It is a series of small commitments. Write the playbook, install the system, hold the review. They compound into a function that keeps standard under any leadership.
