Opening Qatar’s Research Expertise to the World

Interview still from the HBKU and edX partnership launch at HBKU

How HBKU turned a regional-first edX partnership into a global learner-acquisition platform for research, professional education and institutional reach.

Context

In November 2018, Hamad Bin Khalifa University signed an agreement with edX at the edX Global Forum in Boston, becoming the first university in the Middle East to offer interdisciplinary online courses through the platform.

HBKU is a research-intensive university with multidisciplinary expertise across energy, sustainability, law, ethics, sport management, artificial intelligence, health and education.

The partnership created a route for regionally shaped research to reach millions of learners beyond Qatar. Platform access on its own could not generate attention or enrollment, so the university needed a marketing communications system to carry that expertise to international audiences.

Challenge

HBKU had to compete for attention on a global online-learning platform beside internationally established universities and course providers, with no existing reputation in online education.

Research-intensive and multidisciplinary subjects also had to be translated into clear learner value, in language that made sense to individual learners deciding on their own development and to organizations buying capability for their teams.

Those two audiences needed different routes into the offer, while every campaign also had to serve HBKU's wider international profile rather than course registrations alone.

01

Global credibility: a young regional university had to earn attention beside established international providers

02

Learner value: research-intensive subjects needed clear professional and practical relevance

03

Audience breadth: individual learners and organizational partners required different routes into the offer

04

Acquisition: course visibility had to convert into qualified enrollment across multiple markets

05

Institutional impact: every course campaign also needed to strengthen HBKU’s international research profile

Insight

The strongest opportunity was not to compete with global universities by copying their content.

HBKU could offer expertise shaped by Qatar's research ecosystem, Middle Eastern priorities and real-world challenges that carried global relevance.

Topics such as solar energy in desert climates, sustainable sport events, Islamic bioethics, humanitarian action, peace education and artificial intelligence in healthcare created genuine differentiation.

HBKUx therefore had to be positioned as knowledge learners could apply in practice, wherever they were based.

Answer

The marketing communications strategy positioned HBKUx as a global extension of the university's research and academic mission rather than a separate digital product.

Messaging connected the offer to what learners were trying to achieve: upskilling in high-growth fields, career development and career change, applied knowledge and case studies, access to research-active experts, and professional certificates that carried weight with employers and institutions.

The same positioning and content system supported direct learner acquisition and business-to-business engagement, so course promotion, partnership conversations and institutional storytelling reinforced each other.

Scope of work
  • Partnership marketing communications strategy
  • HBKUx positioning, messaging and launch narrative
  • Course and faculty storytelling
  • B2C learner-acquisition campaigns
  • B2B organizational outreach
  • Professional-certificate promotion
  • Digital marketing and social-media activation
  • Enrollment communications and performance support
Activation
  • Launched the edX partnership around HBKU's regional-first position
  • Introduced Solar Energy in Hot Desert Climates as the opening professional certificate
  • Promoted the first course beginning on 7 January 2019
  • Built course and faculty stories around practical expertise and real-world application
  • Ran B2C acquisition campaigns for individual learners
  • Ran B2B outreach to employers, institutions and professional networks
  • Created campaign assets for courses and professional certificates
  • Promoted the expanding portfolio across solar energy, sustainable sport events, Islamic bioethics, humanitarian crises, peace education, sustainable development and artificial intelligence in healthcare

The program connected course-level acquisition to HBKU's wider international reputation, so each course was promoted as part of one institutional platform rather than as an isolated campaign.

Results

HBKUx enrolled 33,672 learners across 127 countries and developed 10 massive open online courses.

The portfolio established professional certificates with Josoor Institute, FIFA, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Qatar National Tourism Council and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

One early edition of Sustainability and Major Sport Events enrolled around 900 learners.

The partnership created a scalable platform for global learner acquisition, professional development, institutional partnerships and international research visibility.
